Is Corten steel the same as weathering steel?

Short Answer

Corten is the most trusted brand name for weathering steel – like Band-Aid is a brand name for bandages. All Corten is weathering steel, but not all weathering steel is Corten.

Why it Matters

Corten is weathering steel. However, the term “weathering steel” can just refer to the general category of steels that form a protective rust layer.  The Corten brand, on the other hand, is known for its predictable, uniform patina and quality. Corten has become the industry shorthand due to its quality and consistent performance. That’s why architects and fabricators usually specify Corten even when they’re talking about weathering behavior in general.

For tube and pipe, ASTM A847 is the standard specification.

Where does the name come from?

Corten steel was developed by U.S. Steel in the 1930s. The name comes from the material’s CORrosion resistance and TENsile strength.
