How long does Corten steel take to weather?
Short Answer
Corten steel starts to weather as soon as it’s placed outside. You’ll usually see the first color changes within the first few weeks. The full patina develops within 18-24 months.
What to Expect
First few weeks: The surface rust turns from gray to light orange.
3-6 months: The color deepens. Different areas may weather at different rates.
6-12 months: Colors shift toward rust-brown.
12-24 months: The patina stabilizes at a deep brown.
Long-term: The color continues to change slowly over many years, but often so slowly that it is no longer noticeable after the first few years.
What it Needs to Develop the Patina
Corten needs to be exposed to weather – wet and dry cycles. If it’s under cover or indoors, the patina won’t develop properly.
All Tubeco material is stored indoors at our warehouse and ships new from the mill. Weathering begins after outdoor installation.
