How do you clean Corten steel?
Short Answer
Usually, you don’t. Corten is self-healing – if it’s outside, it re-weathers on its own in almost any circumstance.
Why Cleaning is Rarely Needed
Corten’s patina renews itself through weathering. Surface marks, fingerprints, and even graffiti will blend in over time as the steel continues to oxidize.
If someone graffitis your Corten, you can clean it off with paint thinner and a rag. Once the weathering process starts again, the steel will re-form an even patina over time.
What to Avoid
Don’t use abrasive pads, wire brushes, or pressure washers. These remove the patina.
